
Programming for Biotechnology Applications Development (1 CR - BMS 602 Special Topics)
This course provides a conduit for staff and students to participate in applying an advanced programming environment in biotechnology applications. Using pre-designated libraries and programming environments, enhances the capability of software developers and reduces the time to completion of the project. The focus of the course is on applications that require reading of biological data from advanced instrumentation, frequently multi-parametric and very high content data. The course is a survey course of application and design issues, development of libraries and modular program development. The course
requires a minimum of 8 people and no more than 12.
This is a continuing course using Embadadero's RAD Studio XE2 (soon to be XE4). The newest upgrades include using C++ 64 bit compiler (to be available in XE4).
The goal of this preliminary course is to provide examples of current projects that are being developed using this package. Currently we have 4 projects that cover quite diverse areas of software development including:
1. Cytospec - software for Spectral Analysis
2. PlaqueAnalyzer - software for high throughput image analysis
3. PlateAnalyzer - software for High throughput Flow cytometry
4. BacLan - softeware solutions for modeling of complex structures
Each of these projects are discussed in terms of computational requirments, screen design, database interactivity, network compatibility and compatibility with a variety of systems.
