Jean-Luc was president of the Association Francaise de Cytometrie (French Association of Cytometry) from 1997 to 2000. He was a good personal friend and a great friend of cytometry. Our condolences go to his family and of course all the members of the French Association of Cytometry, which Jean-Luc served with dedication and distinction. We will all miss this man greatly. J. -------------------------------------------- Dear Colleagues, I want to elaborate a little bit on this sad announcement. Although Jean-Luc was president of the French Cytometry society he was a Belgian citizen and, being the founder of the Belgian Society for Cytometry I actually new Jean-Luc already from the very beginning and introduction of flow cytometry within the biomedical field in the late seventies. When I installed probably the first cytometer in Belgium (an Ortho cytofluorograf 50H) in the Antwerp lab, he was at that time working as a technical representative for Ortho Diagnostics. He later moved into a hospital lab function but was since than and has always stayed a great flow enthousiast that kept emphasizing the continuous education for the novices in the technique and kept stressing the importance of correctly performing flow cytometric measurements. In this time were the technique is readily available in a variety of clinical and research settings, the importance of proper education and mentor-student type of introduction in all the hidden secrets of the technique cannot be overemphasized. All the people who new Jean-Luc know that he was not only a great lover of flow cytometry but also a great lover of the good things in live (ah... the French/Belgian cuisine and French wine!! ... and the Belgian beers..). He will be missed by all of us and I would like to send our (Belgian Cytometry Society) condolences to his wife and 12 (!) children.
Thank you Jean-Luc for your presence and your friendship. Dirk Van Bockstaele DrSc in name of the Belgian Society for Analytical Cytology.
