The Role:
Moderna is seeking a highly skilled and motivated cellular immunologist to head an emerging flow cytometry unit to support infectious disease research and facilitate the advancement of Moderna’s mRNA technology platform. The Sr. Scientist/Sr. Manager position is based at the Moderna Cambridge site reporting to a Principal Scientist. The applicant’s primary role will be to establish cytometry infrastructure and governance, user-training and consulting, instrument quality control, panel development, and assay execution with analysis of preclinical and clinical samples. The individual in this role will investigate immune-related molecular and cellular mechanisms of vaccines. S/he/they should be passionate about flow cytometry and possess substantial hands-on experience in best practices and assay troubleshooting, and will have the ability to work in a highly collaborative, dynamic, and interdisciplinary environment.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Strong flow cytometry focus, including multi-color panel development, experimentation and analyses, and equipment and reagent quality-control tracking
  • Cell sorting for downstream applications, including immune cell profiling and antibody discovery
  • Function as in-house cytometry expert and equipment manager, providing support to Infectious Disease research members on experimental designs and applications to meet program/project goals and objectives
  • Lead discovery-based research with scientific engagement from internal and external partners to facilitate expansion of Moderna’s vaccine portfolio and platform technology. Technical duties include cell culture, protein expression/characterization, chemical-conjugation, cell activation, differentiation, proliferation, and biomarker discovery assays
  • Communicate research impact to broad audiences and subject-matter experts in the form of written documents and oral presentations.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Highly independent and motivated PhD with 3+ or BS/MS with 7+ years experience with an outstanding background in cellular immunology research utilizing flow cytometry. Comprehensive understanding of functionally-relevant molecules for dissecting cellular heterogeneity in a wide variety of tissues and species is required.
  • In-depth experience in high-dimensional panel development and full-spectrum cytometry (Cytek Biosciences) is highly desirable. Experience in single-cell multi-omics approaches, including CITE-Seq is a plus. Experience in image flow cytometry, histo-cytometry, workflow automation, and/or computational analyses of large datasets is a plus.
  • Demonstrable experience in cell sorting is required.
  • Conceptual mastery in modern approaches to in silico panel development, including generating and interpreting fluorochrome brightness charts based on stain index, spillover spreading matrices, NxN plot analysis, and inter-instrument standardization methods is required.
  • Excellent communication and technical skills, and ability to work efficiently in a multicultural highly dynamic and matrixed environment
  • Experience with data analysis platforms such as OMIQ, FCS Express, and Spectroflo is highly desired.

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
