We are currently seeking an In vitro Assay Flow Cytometry Lab Technician. This position is located in West Jefferson, OH.
This position works Monday through Friday with occasional overtime on nights and weekends; schedule may include holidays.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Battelle's Biomedical Research Center team includes 200 scientific staff with varied expertise, including aerobiology, safety toxicology, pathology, microbiology, and chemistry, among other disciplines, who work together to develop and/or test novel drugs and medical countermeasures from discovery to FDA approval. The Battelle Biomedical Research Center is a high containment facility consisting of a highly toxic material test facility, as well as a Biosafety level 1, 2, and 3 laboratory. The In vitro Assay Flow Cytometry Lab Technician will be responsible for duties including but not limited to:
- Serve as the technical lead on projects/experiments.
- Perform sample processing to include cell isolation and viability testing.
- Perform immunological assays such as immunophenotyping, Intracellular Cytokine Staining, and BrdU proliferation, etc.
- Operate multiple flow cytometers.
- Guide and train other staff members on various immunological assays and instrumentation.
- Maintain appropriate documentation.
- Review the work of less experienced staff members.
- Review current literature and assess new and alternative methods for improvements and quality control procedures.
- Read, understand, write, and execute study protocols and SOPs.
- Participate in writing reports and publications as needed, and perform assigned technical tasks in a timely manner to include organizing and interpreting scientific data.
- Contribute to the development and validation of biological assays.
- Contribute to the validation new equipment.
- Cross train on other assays and equipment as needed.
- Perform routine laboratory housekeeping duties, prepare reagents and order supplies.
- Work occasional nights, weekends and holidays.
- Provide support for in vitro-related activities for projects which may include but not limited to:
o Working with highly hazardous biological materials in Biological Safety Level 2 and Biological Safety Level 3 laboratories.
o Supporting in vivo pathogenicity/toxicity studies.
o Decontaminating equipment and materials.
o Understanding and performing dilutions including mathematical calculations involved
o Having the ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment.
o Recognizing when technical operations deviate from accepted practices.
o Reading SOPs, methods, facility guidelines, etc. used in the workplace in a timely manner and adhere to these procedures.
o Using proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data. Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software.
o Ensuring that all equipment used for studies is routinely maintained and/or calibrated.
o Performing experiments using ratios, percentages, linear regression algorithms, and other basic mathematical and scientific principles. Organize and interpret scientific data.
o Conducting QC and Technical reviews of study data as needed.
o Ensuring that the proper solutions are prepared, that solutions and reagents are not beyond their expiration date, and that the proper paperwork is maintained.
o Displaying an interest in developing job skills and in gaining additional expertise through training and/or educational study.
o Maintaining a good work attendance record and be punctual for all project work.
o Adhering to all laboratory and facility safety requirements.
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
- Bachelor’s degree in microbiology/molecular biology/biology or other related field.
- A minimum of 7 years of research laboratory experience to include at least 5 years of experience in flow cytometry.
- Demonstrated experience using BD Flow Cytometers and associated software (FACSDiva, FlowJo).
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Ability to obtain/maintain certification in Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (NACLC required) and/or Biological Personnel Reliability Program (Single Scope Background Investigation required for entry- this is background investigation performed for DoD TOP SECRET clearances), and Biological Suitability Assessment Program.
- Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
- Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material.
- Must be willing to work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and/or 3 (BSL3) (biocontainment) environment and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection.
- Must be willing to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents
- Must be willing to participate in random drug screening
- Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, and lift heavy items.
- Must be able to work overtime, weekend, and holiday hours.
- Newly hired employees are subject to a 90 day introductory period, during which their performance is evaluated by supervision.
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
- Preference will be given to candidates with 1 – 2 years of experience and knowledge or training in Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
