POSITION:  Flow Facility Manager

 

OVERVIEW:

The DHVI Flow Cytometry Facility has been providing state-of-the-art flow-based analysis and cell sorting for over 25 years.  The Facility currently has two four-laser BD FACSARIAII sorters, one five-laser BD Influx sorter, two four-laser BD LSRIIs, and one two laser BD LSRFortessa.  The facility has two full-time BD trained operators, supports 120+ principal investigators, provides comprehensive training for 24/7 independent use of analytical instruments and sorts samples at biosafety levels 1, 2 and 3, including CDC Select Agents.  The DHVI Flow Cytometry Facility Manager position will be responsible for running the day-to-day operations of the DHVI flow cytometry facility, operating cytometers as needed and implementing innovative cytometry-based approaches in support of the scientific research activities of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute and collaborating entities.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Ensure that all Flow Facility work is performed under DHVI-approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and provide day-to-day monitoring of safe work practices in the Facility to ensure full compliance with all safety regulations/SOPs.

·      Manage and supervise the Flow Facility technical staff including recruitment and selection, performance management, and professional/skill development. Train, teach, and mentor staff as required

·      Coordinate resource and staff scheduling to meet the needs of all facility users.  Provide back up operator coverage on all facility instruments as needed.

·      Ensure all Flow Facility instruments are properly maintained and functioning at optimal performance levels.  Develop and implement a real-time reporting system for instrument QA and service logs.  Ensure all data generated in the facility appropriately archived in a timely manner to ensure data integrity, provenance and long-term retrieval.

·      Collaborate with DHVI leadership and Principal Investigators to bring new innovative flow-based applications and approaches to the Flow Facility.  Collaborate on preparing and completing research grants, contracts,s cientific projects and manuscripts. It is hoped that the Flow Facility Manager will become a full collaborative partner in all flow-based DHVI research.

·      Collaborate with the DHVI Shared Resources Scientific Director and the DHVI Administrative Manager for Finance to formulate short- and long-range goals for the scientific and financial operation of the Facility; set priorities, assign responsibilities, and develop annual business plans and rates/fees for revenue neutrality.  Prepare technical reports as needed reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and study results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

·      Expand the existing Flow Facility training program (instrument operation) to include introductory and advanced flow techniques (e. g. sample preparation, panel development and data analysis).

·      Perform other duties as requested by the DHVI Shared Resources Scientific Director, COO and Director.

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

·      Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Immunology, Biology, Chemistry, or related field; PhD highly preferred

·      Minimum of 5-7 years of related laboratory experience including Immunology/Flow Cytometry

·      Proven supervisory skills with strong laboratory management experience

·      Willing and able to: Work with hazardous biological agents handled at BSL2 and BSL3; Comply with vaccination requirements when necessary; Complete US Department of Justice screening for Select Agent registration; Complete Select Agent registration at Tier 1Achieve external certification for independent work at BSL3

 

DESIRED SKILLS:

·      Experience operating BD FACS Aria and/or Influx cell sorters

·      Experience with complex polychromatic panel development and data analysis for surface and intracellular phenotyping for basic (mouse, non-human primate) and clinical studies (human)

·      Experience in Biosafety Level 3 containment
