
Flow Cytometry Laboratory Technologist
The goal of our Division of Anatomic Pathology at Children’s National Medical Center is to create a state-of-the-art, patient and clinician centric, effective pediatric pathology service. As part of this mandate, we have initiated a flow cytometry laboratory for the diagnosis of hematopoietic neoplasms. We are seeking an experienced, patient care driven, motivated, communicative and detail-oriented laboratory technologist to support the flow cytometry lab’s service.
We perform approximately 500 bone marrows per year, the majority of which require flow cytometry studies. As part of our patient/clinician-centric approach, we will expand our hours to include weekend coverage when patients and their clinicians need an expedient diagnosis. As a new lab, we will be expanding our services to include MRD and to accommodate our clinical research colleagues’ study needs.
Our analyzer is a BD FACSCanto II running on FACSDiva software and we perform 6-color flow cytometry.
The acceptable candidate will have a solid knowledge of laboratory procedures with a specific knowledge of flow cytometry. We have a multicultural work environment and thus excellent oral and written communication skills are required. The candidate will be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other. They will have knowledge of basic laboratory billing compliance rules. Computer proficiency, especially with flow cytometry software, will be necessary.
Summary of essential duties:
Maintain up to date theoretical knowledge and technical skills in flow cytometry to be able to assist other staff with accurate performance, troubleshooting and analysis.
Perform routine processing of bone marrow, peripheral blood and tissue samples
Perform preliminary analysis of results
Perform technical troubleshooting and ensure equipment and reagent functionality
Follow lab procedures regarding specimen handling, processing, reagent preparation, quality control, safety, document control, etc.
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results and notify appropriate staff
Assist with writing and review of SOP’s, staff education and competency
Work with clinical researchers on projects requiring flow cytometry as approved by the Medical Director of the lab.
Perform other relevant tasks as requested
Work as needed with other areas of Anatomic Pathology.
Qualifications:
Experience in flow cytometry required (hematology experience also useful)
BA/BS/PhD in biologic science and 4 years of clinical experience
Medical technologist degree (ASCP) or equivalent with 2 years of clinical experience
