
Flow Cytometer Facility - Research Technician
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is a US incorporated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit marine research and education institution incorporated in New York State and based in Bermuda since 1903. BIOS currently employs a multi-national staff of approximately 100 people and caters to 2,000 scientific and educational visitors per year. Prominent activities include oceanographic and coral reef research conducted by resident and visiting scientists. We teach a number of university-level courses on topics ranging from marine pollution to global climate change. The Phytoplankton Ecology Lab (www.bios.edu/research/pel/index.html) at BIOS is seeking an energetic and motivated technician to join our research group. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be operation of our high-speed flow cytometer/ cell sorter in support of our oceanographic research. This technical position requires extensive knowledge of cytometric principles, an ability to troubleshoot and maintain analytical instrumentation, prior experience in method development, a willingness and capability of going to sea to operate the flow cytometer (cruises from 1 to several weeks), and a high degree of self-confidence and independence. A wide diversity of sample types are analyzed ranging from enumerating and sorting single cells from oceanic samples to quantification of cellular rate processes employing fluorogenic assays to combining isotopic methods with flow sorting.
The successful applicant must have at least a B.Sc. degree and 2+ years of demonstrated experience with flow cytometric cell sorters as a primary operator. The successful applicant must also be highly organized, have a strong ability to multi-task, be self-confident and independent. This position will initially be for one year with continuation for additional years based upon successful job performance. The preferred starting date is no later than 1 May 2012, but this may be negotiated. Salary will be commensurate with prior experience.
