Flow Cytometry Core Manager/Director

Overall Responsibility

The manager of the BSL2 facility will oversee all core facility operations including cytometer and ancillary equipment maintenance and operation, new user consultation and orientations, creating accounts, overseeing of usage tracking system, billing, training and education of users and facility staff, facility website maintenance, biosafety review, inventory and ordering of supplies, data management, personnel, budget, and customer satisfaction. The manager will perform all duties in accordance with the Whitehead Institute’s behavioral standards, mission, values, and vision.

 

Characteristic Duties

·       Operation and maintenance of a BL2+ flow cytometry core facility equipped with two BD FACSAria SORP high speed cell sorters, one SONY Cell sorter, one BD FACSCanto analyzer with HTS, one BD LSRII SORP analyze, one BD LSR Fortessa analyzer with HTS and a standalone iMac workstation for shared analysis

·       Optimization of utilization of equipment

·       Scheduling and coordination of demos for new instrumentation

·       Maintenance, monitoring of performance, and troubleshooting of all equipment and associated peripherals, including minor repairs

·       Interact with engineers to coordinate service calls for instrument preventative maintenance and repairs

·       Interact with vendors for instrument, service contract and reagent quotes as needed

·       Grant writing and preparation of reports as needed

·       Orient new users to the facility

·       Work closely with EH&S to review biosafety considerations for ongoing and new projects

·       Train staff and new users in both theory and practice of flow cytometry through educational classes and hands on instrument training

·       Provide expert technical assistance and consultation on user experimental design.

·       Prepare, review, and revise all Standard Operating procedures, policies and protocols for the facility

·       Communicate instrument status updates and all necessary facility updates/news with facility users

·       Track usage and bill for services rendered in a timely fashion

·       Work closely with facility administrative lab manager and IT to optimize and streamline administrative tasks

·       Perform inventory and order supplies for all facility consumables

·       Keep current with trends, equipment and software in the field through reading, attending seminars, trade shows, conferences, and visits to other core facilities

·       Provide high quality customer service and welcome customer feedback to improve services

·       Manage core facility personnel; includes training, approval of time sheets, vacation, performance evaluations, scheduling of tasks, and mentoring

·       Facility tours as needed

 

Qualifications

·       BS, MS or PhD in biology or related discipline or equivalent experience.

·       Minimum of 10 years flow cytometry experience

·       Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

·       Must be flexible and demonstrate good skills in instruction and training

·       Ability to work independently and with all levels of Institute staff.
