About the Department

The Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Core facility is located in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The cell sorting unit is used for a wide variety of applications including sorting immune cells, bacterial cells, reproductive cells, and can also be used for separation of pharmaceutical delivery particles. The flow cytometry units are utilized for analysis of mammalian cells, avian (bird) cells, and other biological specimens.

Essential Job Duties

Management of the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility located in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Manager will oversee all technical aspects and day-to-day management of this facility. Clients may include investigators in addition to those from the NCSU and College of Veterinary Medicine hospital, surrounding universities, and industry. The cell sorting unit is used for a wide variety of applications including sorting immune cells, bacterial cells, reproductive cells, and can also be used for separation of pharmaceutical delivery particles. The flow cytometry units are utilized for analysis of mammalian cells, avian (bird) cells, and other biological specimens.

 

The manager also supervises and monitors management of three other college core pieces of equipment: NanoString, XRad Navigator, and SeaHorse.  The manager will report results, maintain billing, and answer questions from submitting researchers.

 

Additional duties will include interfacing with clients of the facility on research design and execution and organizing quarterly educational opportunities. The Manager will also be expected to assist in teaching/training graduate students and faculty on the use of the Flow Cytometric analyzers.

Other Responsibilities

●      Preventative maintenance and quality control on all equipment.

●      Scheduling all equipment use time.

●      Accounting and billing for services.

●      Performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Education and Experience

●      Requires possession of post-baccalaureate credentials or a comparable record of independent research productivity.

Other Required Qualifications

●      Background in biological research, laboratory methods and/or veterinary medicine.

●      Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

●      Ability to communicate effectively and promptly and work with a diverse community of users.

●      Aptitude for and desire to teach/train graduate students and faculty.

●      Ability to work with budgets, including client billing and cost accounting.

●      Ability and interest in developing and managing a growing service core.

●      Significant experience with flow cytometry and cell sorting experience.

●       Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds rarely, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

●      Graduate degree (MS or PhD (preferred)) in immunology, cell biology, or related fields.

●      Significant experience with flow cytometry and/or cell sorting experience.

●      5 years flow cytometry experience.

●      Experience with flow cytometry software including CellQuest, FACSDiva, and Flowjo.

●      High-speed cell sorting experience.
