The Emory and Winship Flow Cytometry Core (Emory Advanced Cytometry Core) is hiring for the position of Flow Cytometry Technologist, Sr. The core supports a diverse group of investigators and has invested over $1.2 million dollars in state-of-the-art equipment in the past six months to meet its research goals, including a new 5-laser Aurora. The successful applicant will join our team of cytometrists (2 full-time and 1 half-time) operating a FACSAria II, Sony SH800Z, 2 FACSymphonys, 3 Auroras, a CytoFLEX, and an ImageStream X Mk II (all 4 or 5-laser). The core strives to provide exceptional user support through SOPs, training guides, instrument assistance, and experimental and panel design consultation. The group also assists in the processing, staining (currently a 21-color panel), and acquisition of samples from multiple national clinical trials through its highly collaborative relationship with the Children’s Clinical and Translational Discovery Core. This is an excellent opportunity to expand upon existing skills and stay current in the field of flow cytometry; core staff are encouraged and supported in continuing their professional development through attendance at local, regional and national meetings and by attaining the Specialist in Cytometry certification through ASCP. The core is committed to working toward following best practices, with plans to apply to the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry’s SRL Recognition Program this year. The preferred candidate will be enthusiastic, proactive and detailed-oriented in the day-to-day running of a busy flow core.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Assists a flow cytometry facility and may supervise laboratory personnel.
• Provides cell-sorting services to researchers to include sorting of potentially biohazardous samples.
• Handles routine maintenance of instruments, including troubleshooting and repair of electronics, fluids, lasers, and computer components.
• Establishes and maintains a program to authorize use of instruments by independent researchers.
• Develops basic and advanced flow cytometry training programs.
• Serves as a key resource in technical and scientific areas related to scientific consulting services, including experimental design, sample preparation, and protocol development for a diverse array of users from multiple disciplines, including immunology, oncology, biochemistry, hematology, and pathology.
• Interfaces with equipment field service engineers, and ensures compliance with relevant maintenance contracts.
• Assists with budgets, prepares billing statements and balances accounts.
• Provides support for grant applications by assisting with data presentation and facility descriptions.
• Maintains core laboratory web site, to include information on recharge rates, online scheduling, scientific protocols, and links to other related web sites.
• Performs responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

• Provides Cell Sorting services.
• Assists in training and managing junior staff members.
• Provides routine maintenance of instruments, including daily startup and QC.
• Sets up and validates multi-color panels (up to 28).
• Trains users in the running of all flow analyzers and other core related instruments.
• Documents all training, instrument breakdowns and repairs.
• Liaises with service support personnel when required.
• Monitors and orders supplies as needed.
• Serves as a key resource in technical and scientific areas related to scientific consulting services, including experimental design, sample preparation, and protocol development for a diverse array of users from multiple disciplines, including immunology, oncology, biochemistry, hematology, and pathology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in a biological science or medical technology and one year of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
• Demonstrated expertise in immunophenotyping and flow cytometry, with documentation in the form of a portfolio of previous work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prior experience with flow cytometers and cell sorters is strongly desired.
• Knowledge of immunology is desired, especially bead and cell-based assays..
