Job Summary: 


Perform and participate in specialized technical laboratory procedures of a difficult nature in one or more Pathology laboratory areas. Perform lab tests and procedures, with minimal supervision, on body fluids, tissues and specimens for diagnosis and treatment of patients with accuracy and precision according to the College of American Pathology (CAP) regulations for laboratory operations, quality control and safety.


Detailed Description:


Perform a variety of technical procedures in a clinical setting including sample prep, staining for analysis, and running samples using a Flow Cytometer. Perform routine and STAT laboratory testing as the workload dictates to ensure timely and accurate results for the patients. Demonstrate and apply theoretical concepts of clinical laboratory medicine using independent judgment and must be knowledgeable in the principles of fluidics and immunofluorescence that form the basis of flow cytometry.  Interpret Flow Cytometry results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments; performs and documents quality assurance, quality control and equipment maintenance; participates in validating and/or writing test procedures.

Handle biological, radioactive and/or hazardous waste in a manner that is consistent with laboratory, university, state or federal government policy. Perform specimen identification and accessioning following lab guidelines. Recognize abnormal test results, improper quality control results and instrument malfunction and report them to supervisor. Keep records in appropriate logs and files in order to have complete records of tests run in the lab and for the generation of lab test results. Must be able to operate fire extinguisher.


Operate delicate lab instruments according to set safety and operational procedures. Check reagents and supplies on instrument in order to replace outdated items, replace empty reagents and empty waste products. Demonstrate knowledge of technical skills necessary to perform computation of project results. Call patient results to floors and/or notify physicians or designated personnel of all panic values.

Required Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, or

Bachelor’s degree in an Allied Health area of Concentration (Biology, Chemistry, etc.) plus registration as a Medical Technologist by the ASCP, AMT, NCA, or HEW/HHS, or

Bachelor’s degree in an Allied Health area of Concentration (Biology, Chemistry, etc.) plus one year experience in a directly related flow cytometry laboratory setting. 


Must have working knowledge/application in the following areas:

·       Operating a BD Canto II flow cytometer or equivalent.  This includes familiarity with CST beads, application settings, analysis and acquisition software (FACS Diva preferred)

·       Preparation of suitable cell suspensions for Immunophenotyping. 

·       Advanced pipetting technique for 8-color tube set-up.

·       Knowledge of gating strategies, interpretation, immunophenotyping principles, cell subsets, immunology, hematopathology

·       Ability to troubleshoot and identify problem areas in all aspects of the process (instrument issues, sample issues, antibody issues)

·       Ability to work with minimal supervision performing immunophenotyping.

·       Perform additional testing with custom panels as needed
