Position open:  Technology Director at UNC Flow Cytometry Core Facility

Position Summary Flow Cytometry Technology Director. The Technology Director will oversee the day-to-day functions of the UNC Flow Cytometry Core Facility including instrumentation management and supervising of the core staff. This is a leadership position expected to take initiative in exploring new technologies and teach occasional technology lectures. The Core Manager will train users but also develop training SOPs for new instrumentation or processes as needed and see to its implementation, set up new instruments: rules and regulations, education manual and user training. Strong technical and communication skills are essential.

Educational Requirements Master’s degree required (Ph.D. preferred) in Biological Sciences

Qualifications and Experience 10 years or more experience in Flow Cytometry Core Laboratory management to oversee the day-to-day operation of the core. Supervise core staff and address any potential technical issues. Provide user guidence with experimental design as well as acquisition and analysis troubleshooting. Technically proficient to teach operation of a cell sorter and analytic flow cytometer. Must have an advanced understanding of flow cytometry instrumentation for configuration design. Must be comfortable working in BSL2 containment setting, oversee safety protocols, and supervise lab safety manager. Must have experience with Flow Cytometry analysis software DIVA, IDEAS, FCS Express and FlowJo or equivalent.

The Technology Director will develop training SOPs for new instrumentation or processes as needed and see to its implementation, set up new instruments: technology evaluation, rules and regulations, education manual and user training. It is the responsibility of the Technology Director to assure that quality control is performed and recorded on all instrumentation on a prescribed basis and communicate with staff and service personnel when instrumentation falls below specifications. The Technology Director must be familiar with core laboratory management system software and will oversee billing file submission at the end of each month. The Technology Director must have excellent communication skills for the supervisory role, as well as serving as the outreach point of contact for the investigators and assist in grant preparation. This is an independent position where it is expected to take initiative in exploring new technologies and will teach technology lectures to the flow core user community and present posters or talks at local and national cytometry meetings. Leadership experience is important to be able to provide mentoring to Research Specialists, summer students and flow core users.
