Position Opening -Research SUPPORT Specialist, Flow Cytometry

TheInstituteofBiotechnology atCornell University is seekingaResearchSupport SpecialistforthenewFlow CytometryFacilitywithin theBiotechnologyResourceCenter(BRC). This core was recentlyestablishedthrough a$2,000,000 investment bytheProvostand theDeans of

various colleges,reflectingthecampus commitment to state-of-the-artcorefacilities.In linewith this significant investment offunds, theInstituteis lookingto expand personnelresources to operateand maintain thesuiteofnew instrumentation located at amainfacilityin the BiotechnologyBuilding and asatellitefacilityattheCollegeofVeterinaryMedicine.  Thenew FlowCytometryFacilityincludesan arrayofrecentlypurchased sorters(FACSAriaFusion,

FACSMelody,SonyMA900)and analyzers(SymphonyA3, two ThermoFisherAttuneNxTs).  TheFlowCytometryFacilityis part ofan innovativeand collaborativegroup ofcorefacilities within theBRC, with a mission to catalyzeandpromoteresearch in thelifesciences.

 

TheResearch Support Specialist oversees instrumentation within theBRCFlow CytometryCoreFacility, with a focus on management, trainingandadvisingonexperimentsassociated with FluorescenceActivatedCellSorting(FACS).  Position responsibilities include:

•    Operatinginstrument andensuringoptimal machineperformance, including periodicalignment, cleaningof thefluidics, troubleshooting,and liaison with serviceengineers

•    Advisingfacultyand researchers on designand protocolsassociated with complex, multi-colorflow panels foranalysisand sorting

•    Providingdownstream datamanipulation andanalysis.

•    Developingand teaching workshopsand laboratorymodules

•    Developingand implementingtrainingmaterialsfornew andexperiencedusers

 

Thesuccessfulcandidatefortheposition is enthusiasticabout flow cytometryhigh end instrumentation and the scienceit enables, anddemonstrates strong communication and collaboration skills.  Thepositionrequires a bachelor’s degreein science, technology, orengineering, with at least threeyears experiencein thefollowing:

•    Usingand managingflow cytometryhigh-end sorters andanalyzers

•    Troubleshootingand instrumentation optimizationand alignment

•    Designand assessmentofmulti-colorimmunological panelsand dataanalysis

•    FCSExpressand Flowjo software

•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills

•    Developingand presentingworkshops and trainingmodules

•    Developingeffectiveworkingrelationships with adiversegroup ofindependent researchers

•    Workingin ateamenvironment

 

This position is an initial three-yearterm,with thepossibilityofextension contingent upon continuedfunding.
