TheInstituteofBiotechnology atCornell University is seekingaDirectorforthenew Flow

CytometryFacilitywithin theBiotechnologyResourceCenter(BRC). This corewas

recentlyestablished through a$2,000,000 investment bytheProvostandtheDeans ofvariouscolleges, reflectingthecampuscommitment to state-of-the-artcorefacilities.In linewith

this significant investment offunds, theInstituteis lookingto expand personnel resources to operateand maintain thesuiteofnew instrumentation located at amainfacilityin the BiotechnologyBuilding and asatellitefacilityattheCollegeofVeterinaryMedicine.  Thenew FlowCytometryFacilityincludesan arrayofrecentlypurchased sorters(FACSAriaFusion,

FACSMelody,SonyMA900)and analyzers(SymphonyA3, two ThermoFisherAttuneNxTs).  TheFlowCytometryFacilityis part ofan innovativeand collaborativegroup ofcorefacilities within theBRC, with a mission to catalyzeandpromoteresearch in thelifesciences.

 

TheDirectorisresponsibleforleadership, management,and vision oftheFlow CytometryCoreFacility,and leads thecontinuedgrowthand technologicaladvancement ofthis new facilityin linewith ongoing campus-wide improvements in infrastructureandresources. TheDirectorcollaborateswith seniormembers offaculty, afacultyadvisoryboard,andInstitutedirectors to ensuretheupward trajectoryofthecore, inconjunction with the university’s significantfacultyrecruitmenteffortsas part ofCornell’s“Radical Collaborations”initiative(http://provost.cornell.edu/academic-initiatives/radical-collaboration/)andthenewlyestablishedCenterfor Immunology(http://news.cornell.edu/stories/2019/02/cornell-creates-multicollege-center-immunology).The Directoris responsibleforexpandingarobust usercommunityamongfacultyresearchers, and keepingservicesand instrumentation at thecutting edgeofflowcytometryscience. Specificresponsibilities include:

•    Personnel managementand trainingforfacilitystaffand students

•    Acquiringand maintainingaportfolio ofadvanced flowcytometryinstrumentationand associated software

•    Establishingoperating andmaintenanceprotocols,as wellas quantitativemetrics, to ensuresafeandeffective instrumentation operations.

•    Financial managementforcost recoveryoperations,includingestablishing servicerates andmanagingthefacilitybudget.

•    Developingand overseeingusertrainingprograms, userseminars, and usergroupsfornew instrumentationand emergingtechnologies.

•    Identifyingand pursuing fundingopportunities fortheprocurement ofnewinstruments throughgrant-writing andcollaborativeactivities.

•    Preparingand presenting quarterlyandannual operating reports.

•    Liaisingwith thefacilityfacultyadvisoryboard.

•    Consultingwith diverseacademicresearchers onflow cytometrystrategiesforaccomplishingresearchgoals, includingresearch project design, samplepreparation,and dataanalysis.

•    Promotingtheuseand operations ofthefacility, through interactions with Cornell andexternal users,and via multiplemediaplatforms(e.g. website, brochures,and interactions with theInstituteoutreachand communications personnel).

 

Preferred qualifications fortheDirectorpositionincludeaMaster’sDegreeorPh.D. in Celland Molecular Biology,BiomedicalScience, orarelated field. TheDirectormust haveextensiveknowledgeofand morethanfiveyears ofexperienceinflow cytometryandcell sortinginstrumentationand related technologies,protocols, strategies, samplepreparation,and dataanalysis. Additional desired qualifications include:

•    A demonstrated abilityto workextensivelywith abroad rangeofusers, includingfaculty, to provideresearch project consultation andadvanced trainingforusergroups.

•    Experiencesupervisinganemployeeteam.

•    Experiencewith data-driven analysis and managementforinstrument usage, cost,and forecastingforcostrecoveryfinancialmanagement.

•    Theabilitytotroubleshootequipmentissuesandkeepinstrumentsoperatingefficiently.

•    Enthusiasm forscientificresearch and businessdevelopment,and abilitytokeep abreast ofchangesin thefield and technologicaladvances in instrumentation.

 

This position is an initial three-yearterm non-facultyacademicorstaffappointment dependingoncandidate qualifications, with thepossibilityofextension contingent upon continuedfunding.
