Overview

The Cell Biology Manager is responsible for leading and managing a team of approx. 7 scientists in the research and development of new flow cytometry products and solutions, and for maintaining partnerships with Marketing, Project Management, and R&D stakeholders. 

 

The Cell Biology Manager will provide technical leadership and bring a customer view point to team and project needs for Bio-Rad’s life science products in accordance with the group’s overall business objectives. The Manager will improve and expand capabilities in cell biology and flow-cytometry best practices and will advise the team on the selection and deployment of appropriate tools and standards. The Manager will also lead the Cell Biology functional discipline to timely complete project tasks for the successful completion of product development deliverables and to meet key business needs.  

The Manager will report to the Director of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively manage, influence, motivate and supervise team members, including goal setting, performance reviews, technical mentorship and continuous career development.
  • Provide training, guidance, and assistance to team members regarding protocols, assay design, instrument operation, data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ensure the continuous development of skills and technical expertise required by the team in order to support product development initiatives.
  • Participate or lead Cross-Functional Teams, and effectively collaborate with other R&D disciplines, Marketing, and Project Management, to define customer and product requirements, assist with developing technical specifications and establishing project schedules and project documentation, including verification and validation plans and reports.
  • Provide technical knowledge of flow-cytometry principles and their application to developing cost-effective, reliable and high-quality instrument systems and reagents. 
  • Conduct hardware, software and reagent evaluation/verification/validation.
  • Plan, execute and report project activities to cross-functional teams and management. 
  • Participate in assessing feasibility and viability of new platforms. Test prototypes and pilot products under development. 
  • Support existing products.

Qualifications

  • PhD. in Cell Biology, Immunology or similar life science discipline or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience in industry in a research and development environment with supervisory or project leader experience required.
  • In depth knowledge and direct experience with methods, instrumentation, and software used in flow-cytometry, and cell sorting. 
  • These include: expertise in instrument operation, calibration and troubleshooting, extensive experience in design and implementation of multicolor flow cytometry panels, data analysis of complex multi-parameter datasets, strong knowledge of flow cytometry applications and sample preparation, and familiarity with flow cytometry software such as FlowJo.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with all levels of staff, with different functional expertise within the organization.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills with a demonstrated ability to lead a cross-functional team and the ability to communicate effectively, including technical writing and presentation experience.
  • Professional demeanor with strong decision making skills.
  • The ability to anticipate and solve problems, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Someone who is self-motivated, goal oriented and can maintain a positive and professional attitude under deadline pressures. 
  • Ability to work both independently, collaboratively, and being able to create and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members.
