Job Title: Flow Cytometry core director

Hours: Full Time - Flexible hours

 

 

Overview:

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) is a world-class academic hospital, educational institution, and basic and clinical research center situated in Los Angeles, California. CSMC is seeking a highly motivated Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility, which offers a range of flow cytometry services to the research community.  The Core Director maintains a state-of-the art service facility, but also works with investigators to develop new flow protocols and to support grant applications and publications. Instrumentation currently available at the CSMC Flow core facility includes several state-of-the-art analyzers (LSRII, Fortessa, FACSCanto II, SONY spectral analyzer) and cell sorters (BD INFLUX, BD FACSAria II, BD FACSAria III).

 

Job Description:

The Flow Cytometry Core director is responsible for collaborative interactions with researchers, and vendors, to provide consistent delivery of high quality, timely, and cost effective services. In this role, the director will be responsible for the management of operational and capital resources within budget targets, and will report to a faculty advisor. The Director will also be responsible for staff oversight and development, and will actively engage and inform the CSMC community on developments in the field.

 

 

Qualifications:

• PhD or other advanced degree in relevant biomedical field (immunology, biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology etc.), with at least 3 years of flow cytometry experience, and at least one year of previous supervisory experience

• Strong technical background in biological sciences and complex flow cytometry assays

• Demonstrated ability in the interpretation and evaluation of data.

• Proven leadership skills based on previous supervisory experience.

• Ability to effectively communicate and give oral presentations. Individual must interact with peers and experts in the field to keep abreast of advances in cytometry and related fields. Individual must possess good interpersonal skills to interact with diverse users with a wide range of technical expertise and education.

• Evidence of and willingness to collaborate in the planning of research projects

• Experience in providing instruction to students, postdoctoral fellows, and other researchers concerning technical procedures and solutions related to flow cytometry.

• Previous experience working in a core/shared resource facility is a plus.

 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Oversee daily operation and all aspects of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource in conjunction with a Faculty Advisory Committee.

• Provide leadership in the application of flow cytometry/cell sorting technologies to research problems and in the development of new technologies to meet the needs of research programs. Design and develop specialized methods and/or techniques to provide new protocols in cytometric procedures and assays.

• Operate and maintain existing analysis/sorting equipment, computer systems, and ancillary equipment. Participate in the selection of new facility equipment and software with advancing technology so that the facility maintains its status as a cutting-edge research facility. Perform and schedule routine and non-routine maintenance. Troubleshoot instrument problems and consult with vendor technical staff regarding the best approach for repair.

• Train new users. Conduct training sessions and/or workshops on basic and advanced techniques. Develop training material and user manuals.

• Design and implement procedures and protocols appropriate for the management of multi-user equipment.

• Operate application software. Train users in the use of the application software, and assist users in interpreting and evaluating raw data.

• Work together with Faculty Advisory Committee to establish facility priorities and to prepare long range strategic plans.

• Assist principal investigators in technical aspects of the development of research proposals.

• Perform various administrative duties. Prepare and monitor facility budgets. Oversee the billing to users. Design facility advertisements, brochures, and web pages. Prepare reports related to facility usage charts, progress reports, resource descriptions, and other related tasks. Attend Department/Institute-specific program meetings and retreats to ensure members are familiar with the services offered and to learn what new cytometry needs exist across the institution.

• Provide state of the art advances in technology through workshops and seminars to users and interested researchers.

• Network with other facility directors around campus in discussions of facility management and technical support for facility related projects. Attends departmental meetings as necessary to facilitate operation and knowledge transfer.

• Provide a safe working environment for facility users and monitors safety compliance as per university guidelines.

• Additional duties as assigned.
