
BD Life Sciences – Advanced Flow Cytometrist (LIF100C2)
Location – San Diego, CA
This role is responsible for providing field-based applications and instrument support for advanced flow cytometry users. This position works hands-on with customers and key opinion leaders to assist in developing multi-parameter assays, troubleshooting instrument set-up and maintaining/repairing high-end flow cytometers. This role will also serve as a technical resource for in-house product development and marketing departments. The successful candidate will be experienced in complex multi-parameter assay development/analysis and will also possess a strong understanding of flow cytometer engineering and maintenance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides on-site customer support designing multi-color panels and developing assays. Must be well versed in best practices of multi-color panel design. Has experience with different software platforms and algorithms used in the analysis of complex data sets. Is able to utilize and troubleshoot different instrument configurations.
- Provides on-site support in trouble-shooting flow cytometer set-up and maintenance. Must be capable of interpreting instrument performance verification data.
- Repairs instruments of moderate complexity by troubleshooting, repairing and ensuring acceptable performance is achieved without assistance.
- Identifies significant scientific trends or new issues of strategic importance and communicates them to BD field or in-house resources as appropriate.
- Provides feedback to product development and marketing teams on the performance and applicability of prototype reagents and systems based on customer feedback and personal evaluations. Contributes insights to both tactical and strategic discussions on future systems and corresponding reagents.
- Develops and delivers technical presentations (internal and external). Consults with Marketing and Sales to develop materials in alignment with BD business initiatives.
- Provides solutions to very complex problems of hardware, software, environmental and biological applications. Works on special assignments difficult in nature where considerable judgment and initiative are required.
- Supports the most complex flow cytometry systems. This may require the development of new methods and procedures that improve instrument performance/reliability and the communication of these techniques to other engineers.
- Seeks input from subject matter experts (internal and external) but able to independently process information and adapt to situations in the field.
- Liaises with local service engineers and application support scientists to share learnings.
- Will be a standing member of the advanced flow cytometry team, participating in all internal discussions and customer calls.
- Maintains high level of expertise in instrumentation and software. Obtains detailed documentation and training on all assigned products including design, manufacture, service, operation, and applications.
- Maintains a professional image at all times through dress, behavior, oral and written communications.
- Travel (National and International) for on-site support is approximately 60-70%. Maintains reasonable travel budget in alignment with BD practices.

Education and Experience:
- Master's Degree with at least 5 years' of relevant experience or Ph.D. with at least 2 years' of relevant experience.
- Experience with practical flow cytometry and advanced knowledge of research and / or clinical flow cytometry applications required.
- Willingness to travel (domestic and international) up to 70% of the time.
