PeaceHealth is seeking a MLT or MT - Special Hematology for a 1.0 full time equivalent Non-Exempt position. This position will be working Day shift with shift durations of 8 Hours.

 

PeaceHealth Labs - With 12 testing laboratories serving communities in Alaska, Washington and Oregon, our extensive network of services and facilities in the Pacific Northwest consistently receives national recognition.  PeaceHealth Labs has more than 900 caregivers and 27 patient service centers throughout the Pacific Northwest.   The central lab in Springfield, Oregon performs 10-color flow cytometry to evaluate leukemia/lymphoma/plasma cell disorders.   Testing is also performed for PNH (high sensitivity analysis); immunodeficiency evaluation; HLA-B27 phenotyping; and other clinically focused testing.

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for performing complex laboratory procedures and tests in hematology and flow cytometry, using established protocols and procedures.  Hematology rotation will include coagulation, urinalysis and body fluid testing.  Flow cytometry specific tasks:

·       Process and run specimens on blood, tissues, bone marrow and body fluids.

·       Independently performs all steps from ordering to final reporting.

·       Selects appropriate panels based on clinical information and consultation with pathologist.

·       Performs required quality control and maintenance; does some instrument/procedure troubleshooting; and notifies technical specialist of issues.

·       Prepares and QC’s reagents and cocktails and titers new shipments of antibodies.

·       Acquires data using Beckman Gallios flow cytometers and performs subsequent analysis using Kaluza software. 

·       Participates in the validation of new tests or processes.

·       Works closely with the pathologists and senior clinical scientist to ensure accurate and relevant data is being generated for our clients.

·       Communicates promptly and effectively with fellow technologists, technical specialist, senior clinical scientist and pathologists about status of patient samples and issues or questions.

·       Performs administrative duties as needed (ordering, filing, etc.).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS for Medical Technologist

1.  Evaluates specimens for testing, utilizes appropriate criteria and upholds established performance standards.  Applies established criteria for testing, and analysis of entire process from preparation, conducting test, functioning of devices and procedures to ensure quality test results.  Performs waived, moderate and high complexity laboratory tests.

2.  Maintains equipment and tools; performs quality assurance testing, routine calibration and ensures optimal performance.

3.  Participates in the evaluations of techniques and procedures.  Develops, evaluates and implements new procedures or protocols and tests.  This could include evaluation of impact to personnel, equipment requirements, space, method of comparison, cost analysis, establishment of reference intervals, and standard operating procedures.  Based on outcomes develops recommendations as well as assists with the implementation of any changes

4.  Consults with clinicians, supervisor and other caregivers as appropriate on test results, requirements and testing protocols. 

5.  Gives direction and guidance to other caregivers, trains new caregivers and students, and accesses competencies.  Provides in-service training for continuing education requirements.

6.  Maintains appropriate records for specimens, tests and data.  Utilizes computer systems in reporting and documenting analysis.

7.  Participates in department in-services and continuing education programs, attending lectures, workshops and video presentation as required. Participates in required competency assessment and proficiency testing activities.  Provides (CAP, HIPAA, etc) compliance support.

8.   May perform CAP (College of American Pathologists) compliance duties to include: periodic record reviews; equipment and test validation; development and maintenance of policy, procedure and guidance documents; proficiency testing and competency management; CAP inspection preparation, assessment and follow up; and technical and procedural advisement and referral.

2.     Maintains equipment and records, monitors tests and procedures to perform quality assurance activities related to test performance.

3.     Participates in the evaluation foe new techniques and procedures which includes evaluation of impact to personnel, equipment requirements, space, method of comparison, cost analysis, establishment of reference intervals, standard operating procedures and based on outcomes develops recommendations as well as assists with the implementation of any changes.

4.     Gives direction and guidance to other caregivers, trains new caregivers and students.  Provides in-services which apply toward the continuing education requirements and in alignment with the continuing education program.

5.     Consults with clinicians, supervisor and other caregivers as appropriate on test results, requirements and testing protocols. 

6.     Maintains appropriate records for specimens, tests and data.  Utilizes computer systems in reporting and documenting analysis.

7.     Participates in department in-services and continuing education programs, attending lectures, workshops and video presentation as required. Participates in required competency assessment and proficiency testing activities.  Provides active (CAP, HIPAA, etc) support.

8.     May perform CAP (College of American Pathologists) compliance duties to include: periodic record reviews; equipment and test validation; development and maintenance of policy, procedure and guidance documents; proficiency testing and competency management; CAP inspection preparation, assessment and follow up; and technical and procedural advisement and referral.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION:     

•             Associates or Bachelors degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician,
             Chemistry, Biological Science or an equivalent related science. 

•             Current with ongoing education requirements for continuous certification.

 

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:              

•           Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience performing high complexity testing in Hematology
            department required.

•           Flow cytometry experience highly desired.    Additional training in specific PeaceHealth Lab 
            procedures, analysis and workflow will be provided.
 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:            

•             Certified Medical Lab Technologist or Medical Technologist, ASCP or equivalent is required
              within six months from date of hire.

 

OTHER SKILLS:  

•   Ability to recognize and ensure validity of abnormal patient and/or QC results for testing.

•   Working knowledge of specimen collection, preparation, and test requirements and factors affecting
     test interpretation in responding to inquiries

•   Good written and verbal communication skills

•   Working knowledge of computer systems such as Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft Office programs

•   Moderate lifting up to 35 pounds

•   Mathematical ability to calculate fractions, percentages, ratios, proportion measurements and apply
    practical algebra

•   General understanding of laboratory equipment to calibrate and do minor repairs

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting. Intermittently (1-5% of the time) works in other office, client and conference facility environments. Continuous (67 - 100%) exposure to moderate noise level. The ability to frequently (34-66 %) stand, walk or sit is required.  Continuous (67 - 100%) handling of small objects up to 10 pounds including lifting and carrying is required. Intermittent (1-5%) lifting and carrying of up to 45 pounds is required. Must have good manual dexterity of both hands and employ fine hand movements to continuously (67 - 100%) manipulate instruments, computer terminal keyboards and other items. Good corrected vision and the ability to do near point work at varying distances from the eye is required.  The ability to identify and distinguish colors is required. Tasks involve potential for exposure to blood or body fluids containing blood, or other potentially infectious materials, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. Continuous (67 - 100%) use of clinical laboratory reagents and chemicals is required.
