Scientific Director of Cytometry Core

The Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) is inviting applications for a full-time, non-tenured faculty position as the Scientific Director of the Cytometry Core at ICBR. 

The Cytometry Core is the primary facility for cytometry services at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, FL.  It offers 24x7 services to trained University staff and includes simple cytometers such as a BD-Accuri C6 up through a BD LSR-II with 5 lasers and 16 fluorescence detectors.  Cell sorting services are provided using 2 BD Aria-II 5-laser systems as well as a 3-laser Sony SH800.  There are 8 flow cytometers in all, in 2 laboratory locations near the Medical Center.  The laboratory also offers live-cell confocal microscopy services (Leica SP5), nanoparticle counting (Nanosight NS300), and is affiliated with another campus lab offering large particle sorting (Union Biometrica Biosorter Pro).

The Cytometry Core Scientific Director will serve as the site expert in cell sorting and analysis and will be responsible for administrative oversight and operation of the core, including utilizing or developing flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies. Duties include staff resource time management and project assignment, hiring and core staff supervision. Customer consultations, providing training to users, processing biological specimens as necessary, and data processing and delivery. Implementation and oversight of new instrumentations and methodologies is also required. 

As the ICBR site expert in cell sorting and analysis, the Scientific Director will play a key role in communicating the latest developments in sorting and analysis to the UF research community. The Director will also contribute to the preparation of shared instrument grant applications.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise all staff within the core
  • Consult with core customers and design projects to meet their needs
  • Schedule and assign projects to core staff
  • Evaluate equipment needs, including implementing automation
  • Prepare and manage operating budgets and set service fees 
  • Other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Immunology, Biotechnology or related discipline
  • Extensive experience in cytometry including 5 years experience specifically developing and utilizing flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies
  • Three years supervisory experience in core laboratory or relevant setting
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10 years direct experience in using flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies
  • 5 years plus direct supervisory experience in core laboratory setting
  • Additional experience in with confocal microscopy experience a plus
  • Familiarity with iLab Core Facility Management software.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience
