Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Associate Research Technician.
In this role, the successful candidate will participate in multi-disciplinary, lab-based and translational projects that develop cell-based immunotherapy approaches for autoimmune diseases, and investigate human autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune uveitis, Behcet’s disease, and others. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing laboratory experiments, collaborating with lab members on different projects, contributing the organization of the lab and providing support for various aspects of experimental research.
Job Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates knowledge of the organization's Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
• Basic lab and experimental duties under general supervision as well as more advanced duties under direct supervision. Assists with the ordering and tracking of laboratory supplies. Performs routine technical tasks, and assists in the general maintenance of the lab, such as prepare stock reagents and maintain inventory of the lab's supplies. General techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell culture. Will participate in and conduct laboratory experiments.
• Coordinates and conducts the transfer of human samples between the PI’s clinical
site(s), scientific and commercial collaborators’ sites and the PI’s lab space.
• Participates in study subject recruitment
• Assists in implementing new procedures and protocols to support experiments. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures. Maintains and updates technical knowledge.
Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels of Medical Center. Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information. Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner. Maintains the confidentiality of all research information. Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Is able to recognize problems as they occur; and through the application of appropriate policy/procedure, determine and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to endure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.
• Shows meticulous record keeping
• Is willing to work with both human samples and animals
• Shows interest, willingness and persistence to acquire/ perfect expertise in (but not limited to) the following techniques to excellent performance levels without the need for direct supervision:
⇒ Flow cytometry/ cell sorting
⇒ Magnetic cell sorting and other cell isolation/ purification techniques
⇒ Cryopreservation of cells
⇒ Cell culture
⇒ Generation of T cell lines and clones
⇒ Experimentation with human monocyte-derived dendritic cells
⇒ Handling of peptides, overlapping peptide libraries and protein antigens
⇒ Animal handling, care and breeding
⇒ Animal immunization
⇒ Adoptive cell transfer experiments, including from human to mice
⇒ Fundoscopy in mice
⇒ Other basic immunologic techniques such as ELISA, ELISPOT, CBA
Participates and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor's degree. Experience in independent research. Self-motivated and interested in learning new skills. Strong team skills. Strong communication skills in English. Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
Any of the following qualifications will be of advantage:
1. Expertise in flow cytometry
2. Experience with cell culture
3. Experience with animal care and handling, including breeding and human cell engraftment into immunocompromised animals
4. Experience with autoimmune uveitis animal models, including fundoscopy in mice
5. Statistical programming in R
