Flow Cytometry Scientific Leader (8507)
Cambridge, UK
The Research group in Cambridge UK is seeking to recruit a high calibre scientist to support the development and running of a new core flow cytometry unit. Individuals with a very strong cellular immunology background and advanced flow cytometry experience is being sought. Flow cytometry is a critical capability that supports our scientists in the progression of our industry-leading biologics drug project portfolio for the treatment of a range of diseases including respiratory, inflammatory, autoimmune, metabolic and cancer related diseases. Highly motivated and proactive scientists are invited to apply for the opportunity to join our team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, technology and medicine with the aim to of discovering and developing novel therapeutics that will bring benefit to patients.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will be instrumental and lead the development of a new core flow cytometry unit in Cambridge. Supporting scientists from multiple disease areas in design of advanced phenotypic analyses of samples generated through in vitro experiments or obtained from clinical studies. FACS sorting of unique immune cell subsets to further project research activities would be required. Routine sorting of cell lines and the use of FACS and single cell verification systems to support cell line development would be a central activity of this role.
This is a research lead position and the individual should be enthusiastic and have experience in developing new approaches to analytical flow and sorting capabilities. There is opportunity to publish novel work and it is expected you will review relevant literature and attend of conferences. This role will also involve aligning and developing common working practices across all company sites.
The successful candidate would be responsible for helping to ensure that equipment is properly maintained and correctly set up to allow for optimal performance. Providing daily help and support to scientists in the design of flow cytometry experiments, running of samples and analysis of data.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required for the successful candidate to effectively interact with colleagues across MedImmune.
Core Responsibilities include:
- Ensure smooth day to day running of the laboratory, maintenance of equipment and training of staff
·Application of advanced cell sorting capabilities to support research and development
Support of cell line development FACS capabilities, including single cell verification systems
· Support scientists in the design of flow cytometry experiments, antibody panel development
·Help end-users with training on equipment, running of samples and data analysis
·Identify new technologies that could increase research capabilities, increase quality and quantity of work
·Work with flow cytometry colleagues from other company sites to align and develop protocols and activities.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:
· Perform multi-colour analytical flow cytometry on a broad range of blood and tissue samples
o assuring well designed experiment and correctly set up complex multi-colour compensation matrices and gating strategies
· Use FACS technology to sort rare populations of immune cells from human and animal samples under sterile conditions
· Work across scientific functions with scientists to help generate high quality data in a timely manner
· Innovatively apply available technology to ensure scientific excellence and to maximise the value of research
· Ensure that facility equipment is performing correctly and properly maintained
Your previous experience will clearly demonstrate:
· Extensive scientific knowledge of innate and adaptive immunity. Specific disease knowledge of immune related diseases will be advantageous
· Extensive experience with multi-colour analytical flow cytometry and FACS is essential
o Experience with LSR-Fortessa,Canto II and Aria equipment desirable
· Good understanding of the latest developments in flow cytometry technologies, both equipment and new reagents
· Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communications skills.
· Prior industrial experience desirable but not essential
The role also requires: National and international travel (<10% of time).
Education: PhD or BSc/MSc and relevant experience in a cell biology/immunology related field.
