Under the direction of the Director, Core Laboratories develops, improves, and implements laboratory techniques and performs complex experiments or tests to contribute to the timely and accurate completion of the research project(s) that involve flow cytometry. Works independently; plans and coordinates the operation of the Flow Cytometry Core Lab. At the discretion of the Director, Core Labs may be responsible for many leadership tasks, including staff training and direction, experimental design and implementation, and assessment of performance.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry or equivalent scientific discipline required
- Master’s or PH.D. degree preferred
EXPERIENCE
- Five+ years of flow cytometry experience preferred
- Extensive experience in fluorescence-activated cell sorting and analysis
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and explain the theoretical basis of the work performed
- Ability to perform research procedures independently
- Demonstrated ability in flow cytometry techniques
- Computer literate with an emphasis on analysis of data generated using flow cytometry
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works with Director, Core Laboratories to provide the expertise and resources needed to contribute significantly to research projects that require fluorescence activated cell sorting and/or analysis.
- Troubleshoots assays and customizes experimental tools to answer research questions.
- Coordinates external and internal resources necessary for completion of research plan.
- Provides direction to Research Technologists and Trainees.
- May have supervisory and/or administrative capacities within the laboratory group.
- Generates clear and complete records of experimental work.
- Communicates results of research at meetings.
- Participates in publication and presentation of research.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Adheres to BCW, Biosafety, NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) procedures and regulations.
- Attends required laboratory and research meetings.
- Stays current with information relative to the field of flow cytometry and the research being performed.
- May have laboratory budget responsibilities.
- Operates, calibrates and performs routine maintenance on specialized research equipment.
- Prepares solutions, reagents, media or stains necessary for experimental procedures.
- May maintain or oversee maintenance of inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- May prepare and/or authorize requisitions for ordering supplies and equipment.
