This position will oversee operations of the flow cytometry core and work with research staff members at Bloodworks Northwest’s Research Institute to develop and implement experiments. The incumbent will be expected to operate and maintain a flow cytometer, cell sorter and cell imaging machine (AMNIS) and assist with upkeep of microscopy assets for internal (BWNW) and external users (from other institutions). Cellular analysis and purification will be the primary scientific responsibilities. Training, maintenance and repair of the equipment are major job requirements. In addition, this role will have responsibilities to help recruit customers for the core facilities.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Performs routine calibration and maintenance of 3 flow cytometric instruments, Becton-Dickenson (FACSVantage and FACSCalibur),Amnis Flow Cytometer, and Beckman Coulter CytoFlex.
  • Performs routine maintenance of microscopy instruments.
  • Assists with analyses of single and multi-color labeled cells.
  • Assists with purification of cells by fluorescent sorting for in-house and outside users.
  • Instruct investigators and technicians in the applications of flow cytometry and cell sorting.
  • Oversees usage and training of research staff on fluorescent microscope and digital camera
  • Assist with experimental design of flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting protocols with research staff.
  • Troubleshoots instrument to correct technical problems.
  • Coordinate schedule for in-house and outside users.
  • Maintain data files.
  • Analyze data and generate reports in a timely fashion.
  • Support other cores at the research institute (mass spec and others) for customer acquisition and contract generation and negotiation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters degree in biological sciences is preferred, four year degree in a scientific discipline is required.
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience with flow cytometry. Experience analyzing cells for cell cycle status. DNA ploidy, and apoptosis is beneficial.
  • Contract generation and negotiation skills.
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, database desirable).
