Flow Cytometry Research Specialist – UNC Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Flow Cytometry Core Facility is a large multi-user flow cytometry core serving primarily the University and Medical School researchers. The core has three staff-run cell sorters and 6 analyzers that are either user run or staff run. In addition, the core offers training and data 1042 - analysis services on a number of software platforms.

Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic full time Research Specialist with excellent knowledge of flow cytometry theory and instrumentation with at least 10 years of flow cytometry experience including cell sorting. Experience on a FACS ARIA or MoFlo required.  Must have the ability to work independently, complete instrument set up and QC without supervision and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as high level multitasking abilities. Good team attitude and customer service is essential. Must be able to provide consultation; advising investigators on experimental design and advising research methods for the preparation of researchers’ grant applications  Daily duties shared among core staff include operation of a cell sorters, operation of analyzers, weekly maintenance and daily QC of analyzers, interaction with users for training, experimental design, data analysis and troubleshooting. Some administrative work will be requested, as well as some schedule flexibility. Basic computing skills are required, while a high level capability in data analysis with FlowJo, Summit, Diva and ModFit is preferred. Exemplary approach to laboratory safety is required. The position includes handling of biohazardous samples with established protocols for containment and use of Personal Protective Equipment.

The Research Specialist will assist users with experimental design of flow cytometry experiments, panel design and troubleshooting. The Research Specialist is expected to stay current in flow cytometry literature and participate in local, regional and international meetings.

B.A. or Master’s degree in cell biology or equivalent discipline is preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
