Position Information
The Institute for Integrative Genome Biology (IIGB) is seeking an individual to independently operate, maintain and upgrade the fluorescent activated cell sorter (FACS) within their genomics core instrumentation facility. The innovative and multidisciplinary IIGB is organized around a 10,000 sq.ft. suite of instrumentation facilities that serve as a centralized, shared-use resource for faculty, staff, students, offering advanced tools in bioinformatics, microscopy and imaging, proteomics and genomics. The position will be responsible for providing highly-specialized expertise to on- and off-campus researchers from diverse disciplines including cell biology, biochemistry, biomedical and neurosciences, chemistry, environmental sciences, and plant biology regarding advanced flow cytometry methodology, consulting on the design of experimental procedures using FACS Aria and FACScan instrumentation, and advising on the significance of interpreted results and the course of further experimentation. In addition, the position will manage gene expression analysis for IIGB clients and support genomics research across campus by providing DNA sequencing (Sanger and Ilumina) GeneChip services to more than 100 laboratories at UCR as well as to off-campus customers. The position will also assist customers in the operation of other core lab instrumentation including qPCR, plate readers and imaging equipment .
Minimum Requirements
- At least a BS in the biological sciences plus a minimum of 5 years of laboratory research or instrumentation facility experience, including 2 years in flow cytometry.
- High-degree of technical expertise in the principles, operation, and maintenance of advanced flow cytometry instrumentation.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision.
- In depth knowledge of FACS instrumentation and ability to provide analytical services and collaborate with faculty, students and staff and external customers from diverse disciplines including biomedical and neurosciences, pathology, biochemistry, cell biology, and plant biology in experimental design, data interpretation and strategic planning of projects involving flow cytometry and gene expression.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills and flexibility in dealing with clients from diverse scientific disciplines.
- Proven ability to incorporate new instrumentation and methodologies in response to rapidly changing research needs.
- Strong organizational skills; experience collecting and maintaining large volumes of data as well as records for services and billing.
- Experience with and proficiency in additional areas of instrumentation and methodologies, including DNA sequencing using the ABI 3730xl sequencer and Affymetrix GeneChip approaches and instrumentation. The ability to work with clients and problem-solve in these areas is essential. Familiarity with the general principles of Illumina sequencing is required.
- Proven ability to provide training (individually and in workshops) and provide guidance to principal investigators, students, postdocs and laboratory assistants in technical approaches and services provided by the Genomics Core.
- Proficiency with software including flow cytometry analysis tools such as Diva, Cellquest-Pro, Modfit, and FlowJo in addition to Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Ability to make significant and original contributions to campus research projects in the fields of flow cytometry and gene expression.
2. Masters degree in the biological sciences including biochemistry, biology, genomics, plant biology and biomedical sciences
