Job Title:  Flow Cytometry Technologist

Location : Phoenix AZ

 

 

Summary Description: The Flow Cytometry Laboratory Technologist prepares, stain and adquiere all fresh specimens such as blood; bone marrow, tissues and fluids submitted for Flow Cytometry for immunophenotyping, follows all procedures according to Caris Diagnostics Standard Operating Procedures

 

Essential Core Functions:

 

  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

 

  • Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

 

  • Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies and quality assurance policies, documents all quality control activities, such as instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

 

  • Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

 

  • Must be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either, must correct the problems or immediately notify the, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.

 

  • Must document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

 

  • Responsible for assisting the supervisor with the implementation of all flow Cytometry procedures and operations.

 

  • Responsible in assisting the supervisor in ensuring an efficient workflow operation and reports any delays and problems that can cause significant delay on the workflow process to supervisors, or technical director.
  • Responsible in ensuring a smooth and orderly department operation in the absence of the supervisor.

 

  • Make sure all reagents and solutions are properly dated labeled and quality controlled.

 

  • Answer phone inquires and take messages.

 

  • Inventory Control ‐ Ensures a constant supply of reagents and consumables are available by ordering supplies or making recommendations to the Supervisor.

 

  • Generate incident reports when appropriate and corrective action log for reagent and equipment.

 

  • Ensure that all QC forms are properly filled out and tasks performed as stated in the check off list.

 

  • Participate in the establishment of monitors for the measurement of quality, production and efficiency of the flow laboratory operation.

 

  • Document daily QC for assays, reagents and equipment.  
  • Perform parallel testing of new monoclonal antibodies and other reagents for hematolymphoid neoplasia immunophenotyping as well as reagents for other tests.

 

  • Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures in performing tasks and be able to do required and appropriate actions whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

 

  • Perform validation procedures for equipment, reagents and procedures.

 

  • Perform and document calibrations of the pH meter, centrifuges, and cytospin

 

  • Display acceptable performance in competency testing for new and old procedures and be able to train others.

 

  • Adhere to department protocols as well as Caris Diagnostics Company regulations stated in the Employee handbook.

 

  • Participate and show satisfactory attendance and participation in required in‐service by Caris Diagnostics and other Continuing Education providers necessary to ensure up to date skills and techniques required of the job. Participate in advance skill enhancement workshops and seminars.

 

  • Responsible for the knowledge and practice of safety SOP’s in the laboratory.

 

  • Adheres to Department Specific Safety Guidelines.

 

  • Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly work area.

 

  • Understand that they may be exposed to Hazardous Chemicals such as but not limited to the following:

 

Carcinogens

 

Strong and noxious fumes

 

Biohazard exposure to fresh/frozen specimens.

 

Technical Responsibilities:

Immunophenotyping

  • Sample Preparation‐ Prepare samples for testing. Prepares aliquots or portion of tissues. Prepares smears, cytospins, and imprints as well as perform cell counts prior to lysing. Prepares cell suspensions on blood, BM or tissue specimens submitted for immunophenotyping.
  • Staining – Accurately performs cell counts to ensure proper antigen antibody ratio for optimal staining. Perform surface and cytoplasmic staining techniques and viability staining.
  • Acquisition – Acquires samples using the FACSCanto II instrument using the proper settings, and correct file configurations
  • Analysis- Be able to analyze data for flow cytometry for leukemia-lymphoma

Other responsibilities

  • Ability to assist supervisors in the optimization and validation of new tests. Perform other duties as needed and deemed by supervisors.
  • Prepare stock and working solution of reagents and monitor proper use and consumption of reagents, materials and consumables.

Qualifications:

  • Individuals must be able to perform each essential core functions satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, experience and ability necessary to perform this job.
  • Candidates must be willing to work an alternate work schedule Tuesday –Saturday with Sunday rotation.

 

Job Specifications:

 

Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience

a. High school diploma or GED

b. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biological sciences preferred

c. At least 2 years of progressive clinical laboratory experience

d. 2 years in Flow Cytometry experience or relevant education related/useful to the field

  • Must be willing to work an alternate work schedule(Monday-Friday and Tuesday –Saturday if needed
  • Ability to identify problems that adversely affect test performance results
