I'm not sure about this.  What I do know is that DsRed1 takes about 48hrs
for the protein to mature to get full intensity but I'm not aware of
spectral shift during this time although it might be true.  Try the
ClonTech site and look at DsRed2 which discusses the maturation issues
since these are at least partly solved with DsRed2.
