The messages which recently appeared address very important issue of
the missuse of flow cytometry in analysis of apoptosis. Indeed, this
occurs quite frequently, and if we do not correct it, the confidence
to these otherwise very useful techniques will be lost. Dr. Vince
Shankey will attempt to organize ad-hoc workshop devoted to this
subject ("Detection of apoptosis by flow cytometry: advantages,
limitations, pitfalls and misinterpretations") (?) The information
will be posted in several places at the Congress. Furthermore, there
is tutorial on apoptosis, organized by Caroline Dive, having several
speakers. We will have many opportunities in Rimini to address this
issue, including discussions following many presentations. As
suggested by Dr. Stetler-Stevenson, it is important that we should
start on organized educational effort to assure that these techniques
are being used correctly. This activity should extent past Rimini.
I am completing now the review article to CYTOMETRY on flow cytomeric
detection of apoptosis. A large portion if it is devoted to
discussion of the common errors and misuses of the methods. I welcome
all comments and suggestions on this topic.

Best wishes to all on Easter and Passover,

Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz
