Our recent (unpublished) experience is that the bog-standard FDG is
useless in E coli. The fluorescein just leaks out too quickly to be
of real use for making a quanitative distinction between cells in
FCM conditions. The method relying on conjugating the product to
GSH doesn't work for coli either.

The reagents are darned expensive, too, so the whole thing was
costly AND time-consuming. We haven't tried the C12-modified
stuff.

Anyone who can solve this problem will do everyone a great service, and probably
make a pile of money as well!

Douglas.
