At UMass we have a FACScan which is used (entirely by end-users) only
a few times per week. We charge $40/hour for time the sensor is
powered on; computer time is free. At that rate, we can't afford to
keep the FACScan on service contract!
Since use is unattended, we use a beta-test version of the defunct
MinuteMan to log use. Unfortunately, it cannot distinguish computer
time from sensor time. Also, many programs can't seem to be installed
to run under it. We've got FACScan, LYSYS, and Filer running under
it, but can't get CellFit or HPPCLINK to run under it. Thus, we have
to give many users the password to exit to the OS so they can use one
of the latter two. We were disappointed to hear from Phoenix that
there would be no further improvements to Minuteman (aka Time Tracker)
for our HP Pascal 3.1 computers. (Does anyone have a better solution,
short of upgrading the computers?)
