POSITION AVAILABLE (Fall/Winter 1995)

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Life Sciences Division
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos, New Mexico 87545

Postdoctoral fellow (2 - 3 yr. appointment) to work on the application of
phase-sensitive flow cytometry to biological problems that take advantage
of the uniqueness of the technology for: 1) separating heterogeneous
fluorescence emissions/spectral overlap (based on differences in
fluorescence lifetimes expressed as phase shifts) among fluorophores used
in multilabeling studies involving cells and subcellular components and 2)
quantifying lifetime directly as a spectroscopic measurement tool to study
the interaction of fluorescent markers with their biological targets, each
other, and the surrounding micro-environment. Examples of applications
are: multicolor immunofluorescence labeling of cell-surface receptors; cell
membrane receptor structure by fluorescence resonance energy transfer;
DNA/cell-cycle analysis concurrently with regulating proteins; DNA and mRNA
measurement; and the analysis of cells/chromosomes labeled with multiple
DNA-binding fluorochromes. Work may also include the application of the
technology to measure low-level fluorescent probe emission signals (DNA,
mRNA, cell-cycle regulating proteins) from interference backgrounds caused
by cellular autofluorescence, unbound/nonspecific fluorophore labeling, and
Raman Scatter.

Position requires: 1) a Ph. D. degree in biophysics, cell biology,
molecular biology, biochemistry or related field; 2) a familiarity with
flow cytometry (essential) and 3) a willingness to work with other
scientists on the application of novel instrumentation methods to cell
biology research problems.

Starting salary $41,250 plus an excellent and comprehensive benefits
package. For consideration: submit a curriculum vitae, with publications
listing and your undergraduate/graduate transcripts with GPA to:
