Thanks to Alice Givan for asking about the fire next door to Los Alamos
National Laboratory and Bandelier National Monument. The fire was 75%
contained as of Friday morning. Approximately 16,000 acres were
burned, a substantial part of which was beautiful ponderosa pine. On
Monday the fire was spreading rapidly with extremely dry conditions and
high winds. On Tuesday reinforcements arrived to help fight the fire
(hot shots), a cold front came in, and the winds subsided. Another day
like Monday and the fire might have reached the Laboratory, the
townsite, and the National Monument. We feel very fortunate. As
anyone who has visited this area can appreciate, a forest fire jumping
from mesa to mesa is a scary business.

We are all fine, relieved, and invite all the cytometry community to
come visit. Unless you look for the burned area you will probably
never know it happened.

Cheers, Scott Cram
