flow+nmr= ?

Fellow flowers-

We were just informed of plans to install a NMR machine in the lab
immediately adjacent to our Flow lab. In fact, along the wall
where our LSR sits. (We also have a Vantage,Facscan and 4
computers in this room)
The room they are putting the NMR into is not shielded in any way,
and the PI insists this is unnecessary. Our institute computer
core warned it WOULD be a problem for the computers;and they
recommended against this endeavor. Again, the PI insists the MFG
claims no special shielding is needed if over 6ft from the
instrument.
For now the Institute has decided to wait until the NMR instrument
is up & running to see what problems may occur-and at that time
take correction action.
My worry is 1)downtime for them to "fix" whatever goes wrong, and
2) ability to "fix" once the problem occurs.
(Seems to me putting hard drives near magnetic fields erases
them...-not to mention making monitors crazy).

So my question is this: what would be the potential worries re:
the flow cytometers? Should we be concerned (and WHAT should we be
worried about) ; or meet them at the door with open arms &
muffins?
