Adrian Currently. we are sorting in a BSL-3 facility with a hepa-filter respiratory suit and the BD Aerosol Management System (AMS). We tested both the old and the new AMS and found these to be excellent at capturing aerosols containing FL particles. The most important features of these systems are a consistent and adjustable vacuum (absolutely essential for an effective system) and disposable HEPA filters (approx. 180 hours). However, measurement of containment should be required with every sort and most importantly a hepa filter suit should be worn by the operators. We are hoping to publish our procedure soon with the hope of standardizing these systems. Basically, our procedure utilizes Glo-Germ particles (high FL intensity particle of varied sizes) at 20K/sec. while the stream is adjusted to hit the side of the waste catcher, thus producing maximum aerosols. Our research found no particles collected in front of the sort shield, on top of the instrument or at 2 feet away even after one hour of sorting. Our detection system was shown to be very sensitive for collecting aerosolized particles. This system (AEROTECH particle detector) is a separate vacuum device designed to sample particles in aerosols at approx. 2L/sec.
