Qing Li,

Our IT people have the same deficiency. Fortunately, it's really not that
hard to network Macintoshes. What you need to procure and how you need to
set it up depends on the details of "the server system" and how you want
to interact with it, as well as the details of your physical network.

The most common scenario is that you want to connect to your server for
file sharing only using ftp on a 10/100Base-T network. Simply verify that
your Macintosh has a 10/100Base-T network port (this has been a standard
feature for several years now), have your IT people connect a cable from
this port to the network jack and have them verify the port link status
(they may need to use a "crossed wire" cable or configure their network
port). If you have Mac OS 8.5 or greater, run the Internet Setup Assistant
and enter the information from your IT people: IP address, subnet mask,
router/gateway address, and DNS address(es). Finally, you just need some
ftp software. Fetch used to be offered free to academic institutions from
Dartmouth, but now it costs $25 from a company called Fetch Softworks:

There are a variety of situations and solutions. Email me directly if
you have any further questions: eric.vanburen@wayne.edu

Good luck,
Eric
