Howard and other interested parties, Our Coherent CR-599-OEM dye laser -- manufactured in March 1986 -- uses a birefringent filter. (Like our Innova 90-5 argon lasers, it has a black cover, not orange like the newer lasers.) The manual -- (c) 1975 but printed 10/80 -- states that the laser uses "an entirely new type of tuning element [...] a low-loss crystalline-quartz birefringent filter". References are also made throughout the manual to similar models that use etalons.
