The highest resolution (over three logs difference) between apoptotic and
non-apoptotic cells based on DNA strand break labeling ("TUNEL" assay) is
achieved using BrdUTP as a marker of DNA strand breaks (followed by
fluorochrome tagged anti-BrdU Ab) (Li et al., Cell Prolif. 28: 571-579,
1995). Of all the "TUNEL" kits, therefore, these that are based on BrdUTP
labeling (e.g. APO-BRDU, from Phoenix Flow Systems, PharMingen or Alexis)
offer potentially higher resolution compared with the assays utilizing
biotin- or digoxygenin-dUTP.
