We tried to find some of those dishes for experiments on the ACAS. We
never found a source, but we simply made them. It took a bit of work since
the dishes tend to crack if not suported when drilled. we constructed a
stand and user a special bit (Unibit Step 3) which is specially designed to
bore large holes in thin material. We then used super glue to hold the
cover slip in place. There was information from the now defunct Meridian
Instruments that the silicone cement had toxic prodducts in it. We found
our cells grew well using either type of glue and the silicone gave better
sealing. After drilling and gluing, we left the dishes air dry overnight
then sterilized them using Ethylene Oxide sterilizers or by irradiating the
dishes with CO60. All seemed to work well but there is significant time
involved in the process.
