Our lab frequently needs petri dishes with holes of varying sizes. We
make them by using flame-heated cork borers. The trick is to get it hot
enough to burn a hole as you quickly punch out the hole. (Don't burn
your hand.) We tried drilling, but shattered too many even using a
special bit. If the edges are rough, we use a Dremmel tool to do a quick
touch-up. As for attaching things, we use a hot glue gun. We rarely need
them sterilized. But when we do, we either bleach or use UV depending on
the intended use. I hope this helps.
