Hi,
We have noted the same phenomenon. Plasma cells are fragile and the best
recovery can be obtained if the sample is processed as soon as possible
after it is taken and using amonium chloride based lysing and no wash. 
The counts obtained by morphology are usually too high because people count
only 200-500 cells and start counting in areas where they see plasma cells.
If one counts 1000 or more BM cells the numbers go down.
