RE: Software

Wayne,

We have the PowerMac 7600/132 (64MB, OS 7.5.3) for the FACScan,
FACSCalibur, and FACStar+, and a PowerMac 7300/180 (80MB, OS 8.1) for the
analysis workstation. We have FileGuard version 3.0.5 on the 7600's and
3.1.2 on the 7300. I just haven't gotten around to upgrading the 7600's
yet, especially since we have no problems.

The crashes we have had do not seem to be related to FileGuard, since they
occur without it at the same frequency. They do seem (at times, at least)
to be related to overenthusiastic printing (not waiting for the "sending
print job to spooler" message to go off the screen before getting Next File
while analyzing, or loading the print spooler with a hundred pages of
complex analyses). Since we started encouraging our users to let the Mac
send the print job to the spooler before getting the next file, we don't
seem to have nearly as many crashes as we used to. We also try to avoid
Save As for the analysis/acquisition windows, since that seems more likely
to crash than just Save. Also, it's better not to start and quit CellQuest
multiple times (as when people come in to use the machine; they should
leave CellQuest running and just close their window). And sometimes the
crashes just happen for no (apparent) reason at all. As a note, I went
through a *lot* of sturm und drang troubleshooting the crashes, looking at
software, extensions, control panels, the network, the phase of the moon,
etc. and came to the conclusion that sometimes CellQuest (and Modfit) just
crash for reasons known only to the Computer Gods.

At 09:53 AM 6/8/99 -0600, thus did you send forth:
