Ken Mcdonald wrote asking about DNA staining for the purpose of isolating live cells to be used in culture. We have published a number of papers in which human hematopoietic cells in different phases of cell cycle were isolated using Hoechst 33342 and pyronin Y. This combination allows for the isolation of viable cells (works better in human than in murine cells) and for the distinction between G0 and G1 whereas Hoechst alone will give you no better than a G0/G1 versus S and G2+M separation. look up Blood Oct 15. 92(8):2641-2649, 1998 for details Edward F.
