The method is my chapter in Current Protocols in Cytometry by John Wiley &
Sons. An early draft (with zippy color plots rather than dull black and
white ones) is present at:

When using PE with 7-AAD, pay close attention to compensation of PE-bright
cells vs.. 7-AAD fluorescence. Viable cells could be gated out if
compensation is done poorly.
