Two things spring to mind:
When I did some UV work on a FACS 440 some years ago, I found the side
scatter to be MUCH lower sensitivity than with visible laser; I think that
UV light is not scattered as much, and the PMT was less sensitive to UV.
I did not get ANY UV side scatter until I removed the 488 bandpass filter
from the side scatter detector! (took me at least a week to think of it...)
