CYTO-STATS

CD29 is the integrin b1 chain which is expressed as a heterodimer non-covalently associated with the integrin a subunits:1 to 6 (CD49a to CD49f) also known as Very Late Antigens (VLA). It is also called platelet GPIIa. It is a receptor of fibronectin. The antigen mediates cellular adhesion. This glycoprotein complex has a molecular weight of 130 kDa. It has broad cellular reactivity but is not expressed by erythrocytes. In normal peripheral blood it is found on a subset of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes and on a minority of B cells. The inducer/helper subpopulations of CD4+ lymphocytes coexpress CD4 and CD29. K20 is a non blocking antibody in CD29 mediated adhesion but Lia1/2 and 4B4 are blocking antibodies. 4B4 and K20 antibodies were evaluated during the Third International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
