The CD19 (B4) antigen is a type I integral membrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 95 kDa. This molecule is expressed on all normal B cells including pre B cells, but it is lost during maturation to plasma cells. It is also found on the surface of follicular dendritic cells, on the early cells of myelomonocytic lineage and on most stabilized B cell lines. It is not present on normal T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and granulocytes. In vitro studies indicate that CD19 antibodies have an inhibitory effect on the activation and proliferation of B cells. They also inhibit the B cell response after co-stimulation by anti-immunoglobulin and Interleukin 4. B4 antibody was characterized during the Second International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens. B4 Lytic was characterized during the Third Workshop.
