Martin Poot made the suggestion that we hold a low cost meeting to
discuss the role of cytometry in the study of apoptosis.

ISAC is holding its first main off-year meeting at the University of Toronto,
June 20-22, 1997. This is not intended to be a smaller version of the main
meetings such as the one being held in RImini. Instead the meeting will
focus on a single area of major scientific importance; namely the regulation
of cell growth and death in human cancer. It is intended to translate rapid
progress understanding these mechanisms in model systems into the study
of real human cancer, using advanced cytometric techniques as the glue
that keeps the whole thing together. In other words, it will try to bring
clnical cytometry into the mainstream of molecular pathology.

Although the Toronto meeting will feature some plenary talks intended to
review the fundamental science of cell cycle control and mechanisms of
apoptosis, most of the meeting will be given over to workshop-style
sessions. There will not be time to go into a lot of technical detail about
methods at the meeting. However, one possibility might be to hold a
satelite meeting that would focus more on this. The satelite meeting could
either be held in the University (which is quite pleasant, and very
inexpensive), or in one of the many countryside resorts in Ontario.
