SUGEN Inc., a biopharmaceutical start-up company located in the San
Francisco Bay area, is looking for a Research Associate to fill the
following position:

Description of responsibilities: (I) Flow cytometry. This individual will
be responsible for establishing and maintaining cell sorter/analysis
capability at SUGEN. Responsibilities include: routine maintenance and
supply; trouble-shooting; performing analysis for other members of the
SUGEN team; instructing other team members in the use of the FACS
equipment. (II) Cell culture and in vivo experimentation. This individual
will also be involved in drug discovery and preclinical evaluation, with a
particular emphasis on the immunoregulatory activities of candidate
compounds. Responsibilities include maintenance of numerous mammalian cell
lines; infection of cell lines with recombinant viruses;
and in vivo experiments. (III) Hybridoma laboratory. This individual will
also be involved in establishing and maintaining a hybridoma core facility
at SUGEN, for the purpose of generating monoclonal antibodies to
newly-defined molecules of interest to our research programs.
Responsibilities include design and implementation of immunization
protocols; cell fusion; screening of hybrids by ELISA and other methods;
cloning hybridoma cells; maintaining cell cultures and frozen stocks of
hybridoma cells; transferring selected hybridoma clones to Cell Biology for
scale-up and purification of monoclonal antibodies; maintaining accurate
records.

Qualifications: Minimum BA or BS in biological sciences with 2 to 5 years
experience in flow cytometry/immunology research. Training and experience
in operation of Becton Dickinson FACScan equipment is a must. Cell culture
and animal handling experience is a definite plus.
