Time tracking on HP's

On April 17th, Eric Martz asked about solutions for tracking instrument
use on HP computers. I developed my own system for this, which is
available free to anyone who is interested. I call it FACSLOG, and
essentially it is a program that is run from the AUTOSTART file on an HP
computer. It takes control of the keyboard and allows the user to enter
only 3 initials and a password. When sucessfully entered, the program
logs the user's ID and the time into a database, "unlocks" the keyboard
and terminates, so any other program can be run. To log out, the user
re-runs the program, which enters the time in the database and waits for
the next user. A suite of programs are available to the system
administrator to set up passwords and report the system use.
Unfortunately, there is no way to distinguish instrument use from simple
computer analysis; in my lab, we have separate computers for each and
charge accordingly.

While the system was originally developed in 1988 to run under the HP
Pascal Workstation System Version 3.1, it will still work with Pascal
3.2X and BD's MasterPage. I've given out about 1-2 dozen copies of it -
the only problems that have gotten back to me (which were very few)
seemed related to hard disk failures. Sorry, it is not available by
"anonymous ftp" (yet), so anyone interested should mail me a request
on letterhead, together with an HP-formatted floppy disk.
