sorters

In response to Dr. Reason's message on March 8, 1993 with regards to sorters:

Currently, we are running a FACS Vantage for 'bulk' sorting, as well as sorting
into 96-well plates (with ACDU). We are still optimizing the bulk sorts, and
presently run about 100 million cells at 5000/sec with good recovery and purity.
The ACDU works well, too. We also had a FACStarPLUS which worked just as well.
Both machines have similar fluidics as the 440. The Vantage comes with a very
convenient video camera for monitoring sorting: you can view both the droplet
breakoff and side-stream formation at the same time, while sorting. A camera is
optional on the StarPLUS (we had a standard microscope ocular). The Vantage
also comes with AutoSort(tm), which allows you to calculate your breakoff
distance with 3 mouse-clicks; this is probably the best 'user friendly' sort
feature, and makes the Vantage the easiest to use. A very highly recommended
option for either machine would be the MacroSort. Although it is intended for
sorting large particles, it may improve 'regular' sorting as well, by providing
more stable side streams than conventional acoustic (piezo-electric) droplet
formation devices (the standard mechanism on probably all cytometers).

Hope this isn't too late to be of some help!
